Prayer Logic

Prayer Logic is an important element of choice and consequence for the world since its inception in the Age of Gods. It is a power and a set of rules shared between mortals that binds all the Gods to The Ancient World.

While there have been many deities who have come to prominence in the world, Prayer is their only source of power and influence. Whether they retain or lose their power depends heavily on mortal support through Prayer.

For example; During the Age of Gods II, many new deities rose to power in response to hightened faith among the mortals at the time, such as the Lord of War and the Lord of Light. Prayer, and fighting in the name of a chosen God would often bestow gifts or titles upon the mortals.

Similarly, during the Age of Order, a new deity by the name of Vaestian, God of Order, rose to prominence. He promised that with the support of the mortals, he would lead them to a new Age of Gods (3?).

Though support and Prayer for Vaestian was strong initially, as the age progressed, the mortals chose a life of raiding and personal glory over Prayer, showing very little interest in Vaestian’s promise. Prayer for Vaestian waned, and as a result, TAW progressed to Age of Ruin instead, which led to the chain of events leading to Age of Darkness II and the end of that civilization.

It is for this reason that Prayer Logic is an incredibly powerful tool that is bestowed upon the mortals of The Ancient World whether they are aware of it or not. It acts as a sort of voting system that influences the direction the world takes.

In Summary:

  • As a deity is worshiped with prayer and tribute, their power will grow.
  • Worship, or tribute, is meaningless unless the nature of the worship, or tribute, is fitting for the particular God.
  • Prayer can involve constructing shrines or temples to a chosen God, where mortals can offer and receive gifts.
  • Building shrines to a particular God is an incredibly potent Prayer method.
  • A God with many worshipers is always more powerful than a God with fewer.

Terth, God of Darkness

The God of Darkness is the one and only “God” who is not tethered to Prayer Logic in the same way that the other Gods are. A common belief is that Terth’s hatred is aimed at the mortals, or that his invasions into the ancient realm boils down to some kind of territory dispute. But it’s more likely his hatred is aimed at the other Gods.

Since the mortals are the Gods primary source of power (through prayer), the mortal realm becomes a target. By destroying the mortal realms, the Gods are cut off from their source of power. Decline of Prayer is how Terth is able to grow in his own power and win in his conquests.

There are other realms besides the ancient realm, such as the realm of Shaurekoth Durn. But the Gods have a special interest in keeping the ancient realm from being totally lost, as Prayer is a source of power for them and it is why the Gods and other deities still appear in the realm today.
